Dr. Byers graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado in 1976 and recived his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard Medical School and Harvard University in 1983. He trained in Anatomic Pathology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital under Dr. Ramzi Cotran and trained in Dermatopathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital under Dr. Martin C. Mihm, Jr. Dr. Byers is board-certified in Pathology and Dermatopathology. From 1987 to 1994 he was an Instructor and Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the Dermatopathology Unit. In 1994 he joined the Skin Pathology Lab as a dermatopathologist and Boston University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Dermatology. In 1999 he became Professor of Dermatology and was awarded Jag Bhawan Professor of Dermatopathology in 2007. His research interests are in pigment cell biology and melanoma. He has over 85 publications. Dr. Byers' area of expertise is melanocytic lesions.
Dr. Byers joined as consultant in Central Coast Pathology Consultants, Inc., San Luis Obispo, California in 2009.
